The Huerta of Murcia

The Huerta de Murcia is a valuable ecosystem that surrounds the city of Murcia and a unique enclave full of history and millenary traditions. We invite you to discover it.

Hermitages and churches, landscapes, irrigation channels, gastronomy and age-old traditions

Along attractive routes, to do with friends or family, you can find chapels and churches, flour and pepper mills, idyllic cultural landscapes, major and minor irrigation channels, hydraulic elements such as waterwheels and water dividers, leafy trees, vegetation, fauna, huerta bowling, traditional bars where you can taste the gastronomy of Murcia, agriculture and popular festivals. These are, without a doubt, elements of great heritage and cultural interest that have come down to us thanks to the effort and work of the inhabitants of the huerta.

From the city of Murcia itself, there are various means of transport available to take you into the Huerta landscape. Bike hire, electric motorbikes, trams or buses allow you to take a short trip to any point in the Huerta and enjoy it. Although the best proposal is to go for a walk and enjoy the landscape, the aroma and the atmosphere offered by its paths, lanes and trails.

The wheel of La Ñora, the monastery of Los Jerónimos, mills and tower houses are all part of the important heritage of La Ñora

In the northern part of the city, the Aljufía irrigation channel runs from the La Contraparada weir to the lands of the Vega Baja. In its first stretch, the villages of Javalí Viejo, La Ñora, Guadalupe or La Albatalía show us important heritage elements such as the wheel of La Ñora, the monastery of Los Jerónimos or the different mills, tower houses and minor irrigation ditches distributed throughout the territory of La Huerta.

On the south side, also starting from the La Contraparada weir, the main irrigation channel of Alquibla or Barreras runs from this historic enclave through the towns of Alcantarilla, Puebla de Soto, San Ginés, Aljucer... Along the route you can enjoy the Alcantarilla wheel, the Museum of the Huerta, minor irrigation channels and irrigation channels, the popular tower houses and visits to small orchards scattered throughout the territory.

In the orchard of Murcia there are corners with an important level of landscape

El Rincón de Almodóvar is located on the right bank of the Segura River, about 12 km from the capital, its lands include those of the districts of Alquerías and Los Ramos. In this unique enclave you can visit the Torre de Almodóvar, the Torre Rocamora or Miralles, important two-storey buildings made of stone and solid brick characterised by the use of wrought iron, large balconies and wooden beams. These buildings, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, are topped by a chamber or room with arches facing outwards (in the case of the Torre Rocamora) and a tower or spire in the centre of the house in the form of a tower (in the case of the Torre Almodóvar).

In the hamlet of Llano de Brujas we find another spot popularly known as the Rincón de San Antón, an enclave located on the left bank of the Segura river. It is surrounded by a network of irrigation ditches and paths, ideal to lose yourself for a few hours and enjoy the surroundings, in which there are modern and contemporary houses and old dwellings of atobas and barrel tiles.

Spring is undoubtedly the perfect season to enter this corner of the orchard of Murcia, and to be able to feel and smell the hydrangeas, lilies, roses, geraniums and gitanillas. This area has a chapel in honour of San Antón built in the middle of the 19th century.

Other interesting places to visit are those found in the district of Rincón de Beniscornia, very close to the city of Murcia

In this enclave, located next to the Segura river, there is an important pine forest in the meander of the river, ideal for rest and relaxation. On the other side of the river is the hamlet of Rincón de Seca. Very close to this place, next to the main irrigation channel of Aljufía, is the Rincón de los Illanes, located in the village of Guadalupe. A stroll along its lanes will take you to the vicinity of the gunpowder mill, located on the main irrigation channel of Aljufía and the back of the monastery of Los Jerónimos.
